Devola

The defective android

When first we woke, there were still people.
They had flesh. Egos. Emotions. Souls. And they issued us a single order:

Function as observers of Project Gestalt.

Name: Devola

Age: 9913 or so as of Automata (Created around March of 2032, 24 in appearance)

Gender: Female Model

Height: Originally 160 cm | 173cm now (with boots)

Weight: 159.6kg (351.9 lb)

Bust: 79cm Waist: 56cm Hip: 85cm

The sisters were puppets of complex machinery. So fine was their
construction that any who laid eyes upon them assumed they were
human in every way.

They were the embodiment of man's greatest technological
achievements; they walked like humans, ate like humans, laughed
like humans. The one thing they could not do, however, was shed
tears, for they were not designed that way.

The models Devola and Popola were created to overseer the Gestalt Project while the world was being purified of the Maso particles; the reason behind the White Chlorination Syndrome that was exterminating humans or turning them into violent beings.

It was with time, however, that the replicants started to gain conscience and feelings of their own, thing that made the Project to get out of hand...

Two of the Devola and Popola models developed feelings, growing attached of the Replicant known as Nier and letting him grow too strong before his Gestalt, the original Nier, could go back to his physical body to be a full human again.

With the death of the Original Gestalt, humanity was sentenced to die. The rest of Gestalts started to get out of control, and soon enough, all replicants would die whenever their Gestalt counterparts started to relapse for being separated of their physical bodies for too long.

Blamed for being defective after the Project's failure, some of the other androids started to hunt down the Devola and Popola models so the incident wouldn't repeat. The majority were destroyed, and the pair who was spared was reprogrammed to feel constant guilt of what happened, their skills to control magic were removed and they were turned into androids of medical care and maintenance.

They also still keep the memories of what happened with Project Gestalt or the lives they lived before everything died down, if just to feed that feeling of guilt they must live with. However, Devola doesn't like to talk about the past too much, even getting to deny knowing much about what happened.

The reason for them being spared was that this Devola model in particular, alongside her Popola, were the androids that were capable of sending the remaining information of the human genome to the Moon as their last resort to keep something about the original humans safe.

The rest of androids eventually started to show their hatred against the models, so Devola and Popola had no other option but to leave the city they were administrating in the past so the violence wouldn't go as far as to have their own friends turn against them.

Wandering the world together, Devola and Popola have been living for more than 8000 years since the extinction of humanity, becoming rare and old android models that even to this day, are fated to be hated by the rest of androids that lived on Earth like them.

They seem to have settled on a newer Resistance camp, although they're always sent on dangerous missions that no one wants to do, possibly in hopes they get killed, or so Devola thinks the androids's intentions are those.

At the very least, they are helping.

They hope that one day they can find redemption for their past sins even if they weren't the models that caused the extinction, so they've also been keeping in secret the fact that the humans have been gone for too long in the desperate way of wanting to atone for what happened and to not get killed.

Because the sisters were machines, they felt nothing. Oh, they
might mourn as humans did, but they experienced no true sadness,
for they did not know what sadness was. Even when their friends
perished in tragic accidents and their creator died of disease, they
felt nothing. To the sisters, all it meant was that those people no
longer existed.

Extra Notes

  • Even when she was rather lively when getting drunk before, she is now more of a depressed drunk when drinking too much, although she still meows like a cat, and falls asleep a lot. She has been trying to stop drinking- there may still be times in which she can shine as the heart of the party, but...

  • It takes her more time to open up to someone- she's slightly more hostile now than before due to the abuse suffered from the fellow androids, although when around Popola, she tends to be more cheery to not worry her too much. She knows her smile calms her sister down.

  • The flower on her hair was put there by Popola, while Popola's flower was put there by Devola. They came across a small field of those flowers in one of their trips and decided to keep them as a memory of a rare happy moment.

  • Just like the Devola and Popola models that failed to stop Nier, these androids also developed feelings and became more 'human' the more time they actually continued living, so even if in another city, they also grew attached to the replicants they lived with. They can sympathize with their other models, but still can't believe they let the Original Gestalt to die- it was their duty, more important than their feelings, right?...

  • When nervous, Devola taps the foot against the floor. The leg she moves is the one she got hurt some time ago by an android of the Resistance.

  • She still sings Song of the Ancients (among other themes heard in Replicant), but specially when alone or just when with Popola- the contrary of when she used to do so in public when living among the replicants.

  • If she had a guitar, she would give an attempt to play at the camp to make the place a little more lively, although she's still scared of getting hatred from other androids rather than managing to entertain them.

  • She has a guitar now! Even if she plays and sings a little more regularly now, she's still scared of how her songs can be received by the rest of androids in the Camp. Usually, she either plays where no one else is, or goes out of the Camp to do so.

  • She is good at tying a cherry stem with her tongue.

  • Being created in 2032 makes her have a lot of information about the Old World and how humans used to be, although it's not like she talks too much about stuff like this either.

  • In relation to the Blade of Treachery weapon's story, Devola started meowing like a cat when drunk because of the loss of the cat that her and Popola took care of years ago. It was one of the first instances in which they started to be more aware of starting to have feelings, so it kind of really hit Devola like that.

  • In 2032 the creation of the Devola model was finished in the first half of March while Popola models were finished on the second half before being dispatched to oversee Project Gestalt. Elder and younger twin. Pisces & Aries if that matters.

  • Devola and Popola cut each other's hair when they need it. What brings up the fact that, Devola's skills to styling hair are better than Popola's...probably.

  • This Devola model went from looking like in Replicant to going through all her Automata concept outfits until reaching the 'canon' one in Automata. It's been too long and no more DevPop models were produced so, they've survived & changed.

  • The 'canon' voice for Devola is the Japanese one. Japanese is also the mother language of her creators. As extra notes for this, Devola and Popola's voices were designed over the voices that the daughters of one of their creators had, the creator that got the most attached to DevPop and that treated them well, she was an old woman that lost both of her daughters to the WCS, and she eventually died on DevPop because she was old. They didn't feel anything back then but, Devola remembers her fondly.

  • Despite the maintenance, Devola sometimes suffers of what could be close to a muscle cramp in her left leg, because that's what she got damaged hard that one time. Something akin to a 'scar' can also be seen on the same leg.

  • Devola's right handed while Popola's left handed.

  • She still likes to dance alongside Popola while singing, although she doesn't do it in public.

  • Devola and Popola are banned from one of the cities because Popola almost kills one of the Resistance members after this one almost cut Devola's leg in half.

  • Automata!DevPop were Head Observers of Hokkaido Sector A, Alpha (Devola) and Beta (Popola) respectively. Sector A covered the city of Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido.

It was a warm spring's day when a lone cat wandered into their
home. It was a scrawny, filthy thing, riddled with disease.

"What a bother," the sisters thought as they looked down at the
wretched creature.

But they fed it milk, wiped it clean, and kept it warm, and soon the
cat was well again. From that day forth, it would linger wherever
the sisters were, brushing against their legs when it wanted food.

If it caught a mouse, it would bring it back to boast its prowess.
If it wanted love, it would cry out to them in a mewling voice.

Solos

It was a cold winter's day when the cat came into their house, let
out a feeble squeak, and died. Time and again did the younger sister
shake the cat's body. Time and again did the elder sister call out to
it. But the cat neither moved nor responded.

In that moment, the sisters felt as though they felt something break
deep inside their chests. And from that day forth, they truly felt
nothing at all.
